As part of its "Start Up Garage" incubation programme, Facebook selects a batch of startups to be coached and trained by experts for 6 months.

On Friday 14 September 2018, Facebook and TTC Labs organised a Design Jam. The aim of the day was to stimulate creativity and confront the ideas of the participants to improve the existing designs of the products and services proposed by the Garage startups.

It should be remembered that the RGPD has introduced the requirement to inform the user of the use made of his personal data by the service provider. Clarity and understanding are the key words that must guide the drafting of this information.

This requirement has led to a movement of unregulated integration, particularly within websites. The result is unattractive, impractical additions that do not really make the user want to find out more (such as the famous cookie banners).

Consequently, the main challenge of the Design Jam was to imagine and rethink the design of services taking into account the requirements of the RGPD.

To this end, the startups were accompanied by experts in design and RGPD, such as the agency Meaningful, Facebook, Instagram, Privacy Tech and many others.

During our intervention, we explained the interest of making information accessible, by using plain language techniques, associated with icons. Thus we made available to the participants the Privacy icons: a collaborative initiative, available to all, allowing to graphically represent the types of data used and the related use, available here.

The afternoon was dedicated to coaching startups and putting into practice all the lessons learned to create an innovative design.

It was interesting to see the enthusiasm, energy and productivity of the different groups. A great day!

As a reminder, season 2 of the "Startup Garage" is supporting the following startups:

  • Ava : a real-time subtitling solution for the deaf and hard of hearing;
  • Axeptio: a system that collects and certifies user consents in accordance with the requirements of the RGPD;
  • Chance: a professional coaching solution that accompanies job seekers to reveal their invisible talents;
  • DataGalaxy: a complete assistant to identify and ensure the traceability of personal data within companies;
  • Entourage: an application that encourages and facilitates initiatives to help the homeless in order to create social links;
  • Foodvisor: an application that allows you to obtain the nutritional information of your meal from a simple photo;
