Legal Design: towards a clear legal language community

More articles

Plain legal language is a way of speaking and writing that is clear, precise and effective, so that everyone can understand without having studied law.

On February 20th, Seraphin's teams involved in Legal Design, Legal Tech UX and Privacy UX participated in the first meeting of the French-speaking legal plain language community, moderated by Didier Ketels.

This meeting realised the idea of creating a French-speaking network for clear legal language, which had flourished at the Clarity conference held in October 2018 inMontreal

The shared objectives of the co-founders of this community are

  • Putting the CLJ on the political and economic agenda -
  • Accelerating the implementation of the CLJ in France
  • Bringing together LJC experts in France
  • Founding the scientific value of expertise
  • Building the skills of lawyers who are sensitive to the CLJ
  • To illustrate the diversity of skills needed
  • Increasing the chances of citizens to meet a comprehensible lawyer (or documents)
  • Generate tenders from local authorities, groups, etc.
  • Promoting a profound change in the system from the University to the Council of State

In the long term, as for the governance of the Legal Tech Lawyer network, 3 levels of competence are foreseen:

  • Level 1/ Lawyers aware of the CLJ: it is planned to offer them conferences, training/coaching and the possibility of following webinars
  • Level 2/ Certified lawyers /LJC label: it is planned to create a certification path by block of competences and to define a certification examination by a third body
  • Level 3/ CLJ expert lawyer: members of the community board and volume of CLJ assignments

The next step is to import plain language into the legal world in France and adapt it to the specificities of the French-speaking world. Do not hesitate to join the process. contact: d.ketels@droitsquotidiens.be
